Informative speech preparation outline

Development of the Central and Main Ideas

It is important in preparing your outline that you spend more time on thinking about your ideas, research, facts, and your style of presentation for your audience, rather than the mechanics of how to outline. Therefore, please focus on your thinking rather than the mechanics such as levels of indentation, numbering, and complete sentences. Your textbook refers to this type of outline as the preparation outline.

Development of your Outline

To begin, make sure that you sketch some draft ideas about the following parts of your speech, and make your ideas and your reasons clear. You may need to do some additional research on your topic to help you in your thinking about what you want to say, but you must make sure that your focus is principally on your personal experiences. Use any additional research only if you want to quote some supporting information for your speech.

  • Title (you may list multiple possible titles)
  • Introduction (you may list several approaches and later select the one you want to use)
  • Body (outline your central idea and main supporting ideas; place question marks (???) next to the ones about which you are unsure; place exclamation points (!!!) next to the ones that are very important to you to include.
  • Conclusion (you may list several approaches and later select the one you want to use)

And, you must explain why you are planning to use these ideas in your speech. Make sure that you explain why the idea or approach is relevant to your classmates. You are not expected to do a perfect job. Just put forth an honest effort to show your ideas, to show what you are thinking and what you are not yet sure about including in your speech.

Submit a document containing your outline. Include your surname, module number, and title of the assignment in the document name (e.g., surname_M2_PrepOutline).
