Week 5 - Discussion





Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses.


 
The Responsible Writer and Editor
Prepare IconPrepare: The foundation of writing and editing for media is solidified by the ability to act responsibly in your role. Stovall (2014) recognizes the importance of this by introducing you to various aspects of the law for the writer and the editor. In Writing for the Mass Media read Chapter 12: The Writer and the Law and in The Complete Editor read Chapter 10: The Editor and the Law. 
Reflect IconReflect: Consider the various points that Stovall (2014) makes about all aspects of the law. Then, choose the one with which you are least familiar. Think of a real world example that illustrates your ideas about it. Also, think about how the First Amendment right to freedom of speech and press has been positively and negatively impacted by the advancements in media technology. 
Write IconWrite: Write a 250- to 300-word response that discusses your views on the one area of law that you chose as well as how the First Amendment has been impacted by mediated technology. In your initial post, you must include at least one in-text citation from the reading material and an additional in-text citation from a scholarly source that you locate in the Ashford University Library or from another credible source. At the end of your post, include your name and a full reference for all sources cited in the body of your post. All citations and references must adhere to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing CenterCheck it! Your post must be submitted through Grammarly and Turnitin prior to submission. 
Discuss IconRespond to Peers: After you have written your initial post, read the posts of your peers and respond to at least two others about the areas they chose and their views on the First Amendment. Your responses should address them by name, be between 100 and 150 words in length, and you must include your name at the end of each response. 
 

Week 5 - Peer Critique

Peer Broadcast Story Critique
Prepare IconPrepare: As we have learned, writing for broadcast is quite different than writing for print. Just as it is important to have our print media critiqued, it is equally important to understand how well we are reaching an audience through broadcast. After you have made corrections to your broadcast scripts based on your instructor’s comments,  you will record your radio broadcast from your Week 3 story script using your smartphone or recording software such as Audacity. Once you have saved your recording as an MP3 file, you will attach it to your post. View the Attaching a Document in Your Post for assistance with attaching the file to your post. 
Reflect IconReflect: (Person Giving Feedback) In listening to the broadcast stories of your peers, you will consider the following elements. To refresh your memory about what to look for, review Chapter 8 of The Complete Editor.

  3. Conscieness
  4. Color
 
Write IconWrite: After listening to the broadcasts of two of your peers write a 250- to 300-word critique on the story they presented. Be sure to mention aspects of the story that were engaging as well as those things you believe could have been improved.
