Discussion—Two-Party Dominance of Government
Single-member districts tend to produce two-party systems of government. In the United States, the two dominant parties are the Democratic and the Republican. Growing numbers of citizens are unhappy with both the parties and are registering as independents.
In this context, discuss the following:
- Are you satisfied with the two-party system? Justify your response.
- Do you feel well represented by one of the two major parties? Explain the reasons.
- In your opinion, should the U.S. adopt multimember districts to facilitate representation for other political parties? Debate the issue with your classmates, arguing for or against the two-party system.
