Journal Assignment  - Costumes and Makeup

More than sets and lights, costume design not only helps to tell the story, but also gives us insight into the individual characters (without them ever having to speak).  A character's costume may indicate gender, position and status, occupation, occasion, and personality (modesty, flamboyance, independence, etc.) - the "essence" of that character.

For this Journal Assignment...

      • find an image or link of a play, film or television show
      • select a character
      • and discuss what the costume design tells the viewer about that character

Remember, costumes involve more than actual attire (or lack there of). Costumes also involve hats, masks, makeup, wigs, and accessories.  Review the Powerpoint notes on Costume Design to understand the objectives and goals for costume designers.  To get a better sense of how costumes "create" a character, watch the clip below.

As with previous journals, create your response, in the Assignment submission below (not in Comments field), as a journal or diary entry.  The journal should be one page long, approximately 350-400 words minimum.  Be careful of spelling, grammar, and punctuation...and be sure to include the image or link you're speaking about.  Proofread and edit your work as necessary.  This assignment will be graded according to the Journal Assignment Rubric.

Journal Assignment  - "Waiting for Godot"

Post-World War II Theatre brought in many more idea and forms of theatre.  One such form was called Theatre of the Absurd, which basically is defined by its title - theatre that is not what people would normally expect.  It's unusual, different and, at times...yes, absurd.  Of course, it wasn't just Albert Camus or Samuel Beckett that was writing for this new kind of theatre experience.  More traditional writers, like Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams, were taking the same concept and bringing it to their works.

For this journal assignment, read the short play Waiting for Godot (a link is provided below and also under the button Readings/Links).  Also, view the two Waiting for Godot web links (listed below and also found under Videos/Links), to get an idea of what this kind of theatre was all about (i.e. the dialogue, theme or message).  It's absurb alright, but what is it about?  The first link is an extended clip from an actual production of Waiting for Godot, the second link is a humorous look at just how influential Beckett's work was.  For your journal, answer the following questions:

  • what should the audience patron, who is seeing this kind of theatre (meaning the play, our first video link), supposed to think when they leave the theatre?
  • include your thoughts and interpretations of this new style of theatre

Create your response, in the Assignment submission below (not in Comments field), as a journal or diary entry.  This response will not be read by your fellow classmates.  The Journal Assignment should be one page long, approximately 350-400 words minimum.  Even though this is not a “normal” written paper in Word, be careful of spelling, grammar, and punctuation.  Proofread and edit your work as necessary.  If including a video or internet link, please cite your sources.  This assignment will be graded according to the Journal Assignment rubric.

Journal Assignment  - Ratings

With the emergence of early Greek and Roman drama came the development of satyr plays, which history has shown were bawdy in nature and contained dialogue and imagery that some people today might find offensive (in fact, an internet search of Greek and Roman pottery will find many adult-oriented pieces).  Throughout time, theatre artists have always “pushed the limits” of decency – a sense of decency that is subjective and can be interpreted differently by different people.

In today's world, film and television (even video games and music) have ratings systems, but live stage theatre still does not a formal ratings system.  This journal assignment is to reflect on and respond to the following questions:

      • If theatre was to institute a ratings system, informing audiences of theatrical works containing sexual situations, adult language and/or violence, would you consider it a hinderance to the growth of theatre?
      • In your opinion, would a ratings system be considered censorship of the artist or merely a marketing strategy to increase sales (assisting the public in making a decision)?
      • Why or why not?including one example of a production, event, project or artist that would benefit and/or suffer
