Upon successful completion of this activity, students will be able to:

While watching the episode of “Intervention” and reading Chapter 41, consider the roles of sex and gender in these readings and viewing materials. Imagine how Corinne’s addiction might look different if she were a man; consider both the reasons she provides for becoming an addict and the means she uses to maintain her use and lifestyle.

After reading Chapter 41, consider the dynamics of sex and power for the women in these examples.

• Consider the role of sex and gender in the experiences of the party girls described in Chapter 41. Would you consider how the college women in this chapter use “hooking up” and flirtation to gain social status to be similar to how Corinne uses sex and gender to maintain their drug habits?
• Given that “between one-fifth and one-quarter of women are the victims of completed or attempted rape while in college” (p. 520 Adler & Adler), discuss whether you think college “party scene” women are more or less sheltered and protected from sexual violence than women living in “fringe” or “ deviant” cultures. What are the repercussions of the “party scene” being located within dominant majority culture?
