M6D2: Formal Deviant Organizations.

Upon successful completion of this activity, students will be able to:

• Analyze social phenomena utilizing theoretical frameworks
• Identify ethical problems faced by individuals or communities and identify effective solutions
• Explain the concept of social deviance and provide examples of deviant behavior in social context
• Explain and critically evaluate contemporary literature in the field of criminal justice

As you watch the documentary, "Lockdown: Utah State Prison," [Video File][50 Min 10 Sec] consider similarities between the gang, "Ogden Treces" from this documentary and the deviant organizations in Chapters 35 - 39. The entire documentary is 50 minutes long but there are 23 segments of several minutes each - watch at least segments 1 - 7.

After reading Chapters 36-37, discuss how the social organizations of the Ogden Treces (from “Lockdown”), the internet hackers (Chapter 36) or the organized criminal operations of Hezbollah (Chapter 38) provide a social space for the perpetuation of deviant identity. Is it possible to resist being deviant, once you are part of one of these organizations? If not, why not? If so, what strategies (think back to Module 5) might an individual need to employ to resist being deviant?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words and must substantively integrate the assigned readings in the instructions with proper APA style formatting.
