Music -Writing Assignment due in 1 hour

You are required to attend a live concert and write a short reflection on it. Attend a professional Western Art Music concert in Wolfville or elsewhere. Choose 1 piece from the concert repertoire (may be single movement or multi-movement work) and place the work within one or more of the historical time periods discussed in class (Baroque, Classical, Romantic etc). Discuss how the materials of music (melody, harmony, form etc.) of this work relate to the musical characteristics of the period. Discuss the musical instruments used. You may choose but are not required to supplement your listening with research (if you do, you must cite and list the works cited). The purpose of this exercise is to attend a live concert, listen intensely and connect what you hear to the various concepts learned in class.

Submit a copy of the concert program with your reflection.

If you are unsure if your concert fits within the WAM tradition, please ask me beforehand. Preferably in person after class and not via email. Occassionally WAM ensembles like a Symphony will include pops concerts, or rock inspired concerts into their concert series. For the purposes of this paper these concerts will not be considered WAM or acceptable.

Format: 3 pages, double spaced. Times New Roman 12 pt font. Citations and works cited page if required. Use MLA documentation style (see syllabus)
