For this essay, I’d like you to consider the various ways in which musicians (including yourself) have

crossed the musical boundaries between cultures to learn how to perform or compose music in ways

different from the cultures in which they grew up. Using appropriate terminology to discuss how learning to perform the music of musical styles has affected your musical understanding. How does thinking musically in Bali differ from the way you think about music that you listen to or that you perform yourself?

Now, citing appropriate examples from the listening list, compare and contrast your experience with

 how non-Western musicians responded to Western music with which they came into contact

(think of Fela Sowande’s African Suite, Latin American musicians who adopted various aspects

of European music, or The Fenders’ cover of “Folsom Prison Blues,” for example)
