Music 21: Wrap-up Assignment

It is 2025. You have inherited a large sum of money, with the caveat that some of the money must be used to commission a new piece of classical music. Some geniusfinally invented time machines so you can pick any composer we have studied from class to write a piece just for you via the time-travelling US Postal Service.

Think of all the composers we have studied in class, choose one to write you a piece, and write a letter to him/her soliciting a piece of music. Use the following format to guide you:

Dear Maestro (male) /Maestra (female)     last name      ,

Introduction Paragraph- Explain a little bit about you as a person and your relationship with music. Respectfully ask him/her to consider your budget of $_____ to complete a new piece of music for you.

1st paragraph- Why have you chosen him/her as your composer? Refer to the work we learned about in class and highlight musical aspects of the piece that inspire or entertain you. 

2nd paragraph- Explain what you would like in your new piece of music. This could include: what type of ensemble/instrument/voice you would like (and why), if you would prefer to have the piece be programmatic, give the composer the topics (idea, poem, story, painting, animal, person, etc) you would like covered.

Conclusion: Wrap up your letter with a conclusion. Two ideas are:

This assignment should be typed, 1-2 pages. Assignment will be collected in class on the date listed in the syllabus and on the Canvas calendar.
