MTH418 Assessment Item 3 (201460) Assignment 3 – Chapter 4 Due Date: 6th October 2014 Value: 8% The assignment consists of 3 questions and will be marked out of 40. Questions are not of equal value. You will need to write/type algebraic and numerical answers and produce graphs (by hand or computer) to answer these questions. Rationale To demonstrate mastery of subject material in the associated topics, and receive early feedback. This assessment task is designed to assess the content of chapter 4 of the study guide and primarily learning objectives 9 (calculate Fourier series representing periodic functions), and 10 (extend the techniques of Fourier series to non-periodic functions by means of Fourier integrals and Fourier transforms). There is a question worth zero marks, and does not need to be submitted. This optional question covers content from chapter 5 of the study guide and primary learning objective 11 (solve partial differential equations with given initial and boundary conditions). Hints Check your answers. You have plenty of time to attempt these questions, so make sure that they are correct. Maple, for instance, can be used to check many answers here, and to plot graphs. However, it is expected that you attempt the questions yourself. Marking Criteria This assignment will assess chapters 4 & 5 of the study guide. More precisely it will test BOTH the method used to evaluate problems AND whether you can get the correct answer. In order to pass this assignment you should be able to select a correct method of solving a problem and demonstrate some understanding of the process (although perhaps making errors on the way). To get higher marks you need to reduce the errors and show problemsolving skills. In more detail...
