Module 5: Discussion Topic 1: The Power of Words

(1) Pick out one thing Lakoff says in her essay about “The Power of Words in Wartime” that really struck you and explain how/why they interested you. (2) Respond in an engaged, substantive way to another classmate’s posting about what struck him or her about the essay.

A few questions to help you get started: Did something surprise you (or not surprise you)? How so? Did you find her analysis to be on target, especially when she said “---------“ (fill in the blank)? Do you mostly agree, but her one point that ------- is true seemed to you to be unsupported? Did something in her essay make you think of how language is being used today in the media, by advertisers, or by political figures? How so?
