As we get started on this forum, remember there are no right or wrong opinions. We are all different, and this is a great forum to put ourselves in a leadership position at work while balancing our beliefs and values. The following example occurred a few years ago with another employer:

As the HR director, I received a complaint from the marketing director that her subordinate was rumored to be having an affair with one of our vice presidents; she was not married but the VP was. The VP was in another division, so there was no line of authority issues. Policy wise, nothing prohibited this relationship. This director was adamant that I do something about it because as a Christian, she believed her subordinate's actions were wrong and needed to be stopped. The director complained that the employee was always texting under her desk, and she just knew she was texting the VP. I found myself striking a balance: As a Christian also, I too believed the subordinate employee should not be engaging in that alleged behavior. However, acting as the employer we could not take adverse action against an employee for her conduct outside of the workplace, even though we believed it was morally wrong. Instead, I instructed the director to focus on the employee's productivity during work hours. If she was constantly on her phone texting (no matter who it was), she could be held accountable for performance issues. This worked, and the director noticed the employee's productivity improve. The director still struggled, however, with the knowledge of the affair. But when it comes to work, you cannot always force your own beliefs onto others in this type of scenario. In some scenarios, you might can share your beliefs to help coworkers in need. But in this example, we had to link the problem to conduct, performance, or attendance and address it from there.
