Modern Asia History

1.       What are some of the biggest factors contributing to Anti-Americanism in East Asia? You should narrow your focus to a single country (China, Japan, Korea), and provide specific examples from the readings, lectures, and documentaries we have reviewed for class.  

2.       What event of the 20^th century do you believe was the most significant to East Asian history and why? 1911, 1921, 1937, 1945, 1950, 1952, 1975, 1989?

3.       Describe the challenges Japan has faced regarding its public image in East Asian countries. What contemporary events does controversy tend to stem? Why is it difficult for the Japanese to conduct public meetings of their actions and responsibility for them during the Pacific War?

4.       In 1949 which would you have rather been and why: A coal miner for the Mitsui corporation in the north, or a relatively well-off farmer in Hebei province. Why?

5.       List and explain some of the ways that the artistic and cultural worlds including pop culture have begun to influence how people think about and interact with their governments.
