Melting Pot or Salad Bowl?

The United States has been called a "melting pot" (meaning a blending and assimilation of many cultures to create a new, stronger culture) and a "salad bowl" (meaning cultures are mixed together to complement each other yet retaining unique qualities). Do you agree or support the use of either of these terms? Why or why not?
