The raw data (force vs. displacement) from the video shown in class is available on Blackboard under
Homework 3. Download this file (tension-test-data.txt) and answer the following questions:
a. Plot displacement vs. force and strain vs. stress in separate plots. (Use a computer program like
Excel or MATLAB).
b. Compute the Young’s modulus of the material.
c. Determine the upper and lower yield stresses of the material.
d. What is the amount of strain that occurs with perfect plasticity?
e. What is the ultimate stress of the material?
f. What is the failure strain of the material?
g. Is it possible to plot true strain vs. true stress for this data set? Why or why not?
The gauge length of the specimen was 2/3 inches and the diameter of the gauge section was 0.1 inches.
Note that the units of the data file are mm and N.
Bonus question (up to 5 points): Determine the modulus of toughness of this material and describe how
you calculated it (if you use a function in MATLAB/etc, say which one you used and why).
