MATH 131 Mathematical Ideas
Final Paper: Homework II
Mathematics 131. Final Paper: Homework II
This assignment concerns the construction of your expository research paper. It is to be submitted on the due date listed in the class calendar.
I. Process for constructing the expository research paper:
Step 1. Review your notes from your research to be sure that you have properly represented the information from your references, and included all necessary citations (author and page number).
Step 2. Consult your graded outline (Homework I) to see what revisions were suggested by your instructor. Use the gradedoutline to construct your paper. Remember that you must teach a mathematical topic and then show its connection to the field or area of interest you have selected. You will not be permitted to submit Homework II unless you have submitted the graded outline. Visit the Writing Lab for free assistance with writing Homework II.
Step 3. Reread your paper to be sure that you have included the following components:
A. An introduction that motivates the discussion, tells the reader your goal for the paper and outlines HOW you are going to achieve it. In other words, give the reader a “roadmap” of the paper.
B. A substantive description of the results of your research with citations, indicating author and page numbers, from each of your cited or paraphrased references. Again, key component of the body of your paper is to teach your reader some specific mathematics.
C. A conclusion that summarizes the results of the paper.
D. A works cited list of the four resources (at least three articles and one mathematics textbook) that you are consulting, with appropriate bibliographic detail.
E. Use this table to assess your expository research paper
Yes/No | |
CONTENT | |
All required components are present: teaching a mathematical topic and making a connection to a specific field.
Understanding of the mathematics is demonstrated through the use of specific examples.
Required number and types of resources are consulted.
Substantive use is made of the each of the cited resources.
ORGANIZATION | |
The introduction clearly states the goal of the paper and give the plan (“roadmap”) for the paper
The information is presented in a logical sequence that facilitates understanding of the paper
Paragraphs contain good topic sentences to which the rest of the material in the paragraph relates.
STYLE AND CLARITY OF EXPRESSION
Clear, concise writing style
Mathematical terms are defined and correctly used
Standard American English words are correctly used
WRITING MECHANICS | |
Grammar is correct | |
Spelling is correct | |
Punctuation is correctly used
All citations include authors’ names and page numbers.
ILLUSTRATIONS | |
Illustrations replace rather than duplicate text and enhance understanding of information
The number of illustrations is appropriate (neither too many nor too few) |
II. Evaluation of the Expository Research Paper (200 POINTS)
The paper must demonstrate:
1. Evidence of appropriate methods of scholarly research. You must have at least four references that are a combination of books and journal articles (NOT websites). One of your books needs to be a mathematics text (NOT the text for this class). You should incorporate this research with appropriate citations (include page numbers) into the body of your essay. Your works cited list should have complete bibliographic information.
2. Clear and effective exposition of your thesis, organized in well-developed paragraphs and transitions between them.
3. Evidence of your understanding the specific mathematical topic that you choose to relate to your field.
It will be graded on the basis of 200 points with the following in mind, in order of importance:
1. Your understanding and explanation of the mathematical topic you have chosen to teach your reader.
2. The clarity of your thesis and goal for the project and the effectiveness of your arguments to support it.
3. The quality of your research, i.e., how effectively you have used your sources. This would take into account the choice of sources, your citations and how you demonstrated your understanding of what you have read, etc.
4. The format of your paper (well-developed paragraphs and competent sentence structures, mastery of the mechanics of standard written English, etc.).
P.S: look to the files, you will find everything you need, the outline, (the resources) and my first essay too have a clue about the subject more.
