Family

Framework:

According to functional theory, family is the glue that keeps society together.  It ensures the well-being of the family members in the following three areas:

1)         Basic needs – food, shelter and clothing

2)         Emotional needs – social interaction, happiness, peace and joy, overcoming difficulties.

3)         Physical needs – physical activities, safety, and health issues.

Discuss the adverse effects to family members when the family fails to adequately provide these benefits? Why do families focus on basic needs and tend to be deficient when it comes to emotional and physical needs?

 Gender

Framework:

Boys and girls are socialized to believe that:

Boys  don’ t cry – they need to be strong and tough

Boys are more intelligent than girls.

Girls are weak, emotional and cry easily.

Dad is the breadwinner and the king of the castle (dominant) and mom is responsible for the children and house work (subordinate).

Boys are more valuable than girls; they carry the family’s legacy.

The reality reflects a different story: women are becoming more and more educated and independent. They are increasing their economic power and political influence. Many women are choosing to have children without being married, deciding to have less children and to focus on their career.  Dad is having to adjust to this reality and is now helping with the house chores and with the children.

Discuss the benefits and consequences of these changes.
