The objective of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to learn from the best practices of 2 very extreme worlds. You know about IBM, they have been a leader in industry for over 100 years. They are the most innovative company (number of patents every year) and have been the driving force in the Information Technology field since it began. On the other side is The Grateful Dead. They were a rock group formed in 1965 and were at the core of the San Francisco hippie music scene of the 60’s. They had a very unique sound with a huge following of fans all over the world.
You might be thinking, what does IBM have in common with The Grateful Dead in terms of better understanding business strategy? A very valid question for sure! But I ask you to read both article and then think about what they are saying. Both IBM and The Grateful Dead have had long successful lives in their respective business segments. But they have both survived, retained a huge “customer base”, have outstanding customer loyalty, and have evolved over time.

I would like you to put together your comments on the lessons learned from these 2 documents and relate it to our Principles of Management discussions (Just general knowledge of topics that include Manager's role in the work environment, ethics and Environmental/social responsibilities, Global management and cultural diversion, Entrepreneurship and new Ventures, Information and Decision Making, Planning Processes and Techniques: Working at Home and Culture, Marketing, and Human Resource Management.). What insights can you get from these documents that give you a better insight into business? What have you learned on how to view clients differently as a result of the documents? How would you address employee situations differently? What does it take to expand a business to a global enterprise? There are some very core elements covered in these documents that apply to any business and I would like you to put them together in your own words such that you have a “survival guide” for success in business based on the experience of others.
