Make a movie

Remember that this movie is meant to be simple, but I still want it to display in a modest way some of the things we've been studying:

  1.  Make it a story. No matter how brief or silly, we humans love stories with characters that have something happening to them. There may be some level of suspense that makes us want to keep viewing.
  2. Practice some use of the things we've been noticing in movies: an awareness of how the characters are composed in the frame, some different uses of where you position the camera, some awareness of light.
  3.  Play around with other cinematic techniques. For sound, make sure we can hear the voices; be aware of any background (ambient) sounds; insert some music.
  4. For editing, try a few different techniques that cut from one scene to the next.
  5. Have fun. Yeah yeah, I know that at this point it's almost a cliche to say that--Have Fun!--but really, how marvelous it is that we live in an era where we can make movies on the cheap, and how miraculous that we humans can create something out of nothing. So have fun with this creation!

Many of you have probably finished filming and are now working on post-production (editing, sound, credits, etc.).

For post-production, many of you will use the editing software that is on your computer, like iMovie if you have a Mac. But if you opt for the computers here at Columbia College, we have top-notch editing software (Adobe Premier) that you can access in the ITC, which is on the first floor of the library. More importantly, there are two women there who can help you out: Jana Connell and Melissa Colon.

Also, another teacher just sent me a series of websites for collaborative editing of a movie. I haven't checked any of them out, but here they are for the inquisitive sorts out there:
