Single path routing

Routing the data across network plays an important role in the communication process and in general there are many steps involved in routing the packets across the clients and servers. In general whenever a node across the network want to send the packets to the destination node, the typical routing process is initiated and the routing includes fetching the IP address of the destination from the packets and selecting the path to route the packets (Andersen, 2001). Selecting the appropriate path to route the packets is the key step across the routing process and this process includes various tasks like choosing the shortest path, choosing the energy efficient path and choosing the reliable path without any link failures. In general routing depends on the path chosen in most of the cases and the routing can be either single path routing or multi path routing. In general single path routing includes selecting a best single path to route the packets from source to destination (Chen, 2009). Border gateway protocol can be considered as the best example of single path routing and the actual implementation procedure followed across BGP is as explained below

Border Gateway Protocol

Important routing decisions across the internet are done using the Border Gateway protocol (BGP) and BGP is known for its frequent updates across the network. A typical BGP maintains all the information related to the nodes across the network in the form of IP tables or prefixes and searches for the destination from this information. The typical routing decisions are made using some metrics across BGP implementation like path information, network policies and the rules list implemented across the network (Huston, 2010). In most of the cases, BGP is referred as the reachability protocol rather than the routing protocol as the main technical implementation across the BGP revolves around the decisions of the reachability of the network rather than the routing decision. BGP can be considered as the single path routing protocol, where it always advertises a single path to the destination
