The literature review aims first to coherently draw together--assimilate--emerging research on a topic of interest to you. In any emerging topic there is debate. This work then aims at articulating that debate and drawing upon knowledge from sources--synthesis--to offer judgment on how to resolve that debate. 

Guidelines for the Literature Review

A literature review will contain, at the least, the following qualities:

• Intimate understanding of emerging knowledge in a specific field;

• Effectively conveyed description of current research and concerns of this field, including an introductory list of keyterms or keywords;

• Careful attention to differences among positions in the field, evaluating these differences and suggesting their possible resolution and/or prospects for further research;

• A fair and ethical representation of the work of others in the field, including formal acknowledgements and proper citation;

• Proper length and structure and proper presentation of visual material (if appropriate);

• Tone, diction, and style appropriate to a technical audience;

• Proper citation, grammar, syntax, and punctuation.

This will be a full rough draft of your literature review or proposal. Suggested range of sources for Rough Draft 3: ten to fifteen. This is an arbitrary figure: how much knowledge is enough to be authoritative, to head for expertise, given our resources (experience, knowledge, time)? Do fifteen good sources offer better knowledge than ten? Is fifteen enough? How do you know?

Before the literature review, please write one or several paragrahs to identify and write out two moments of assimilation and two moments of synthesis. See the handout, “Literature Review: An Excursion into Knowledge,” in the attachments. It does not include in 2000 words literature review so separete them.
