Related Reading: Modules 26-28, lecture notes.

Find a job ad for which you are currently qualified. (You may pretend you have already graduated, or you may choose a job you are currently qualified for.)

I encourage you to find an ad that will lend itself to your level of education, training, and work experience. The job may be within your discipline or outside it. You may find ads on websites, in newspapers, or from some other print source (trade journal or magazine, newspaper, company bulletin board, etc.) You may not choose a job ad that requires you to write to a classified "key P:". Find a job ad that enables you to complete research about a company and to write to a specific person within an organization. Ideally, you'll find a current posting, but if not, you may search back issues of newspapers, etc. I encourage you to choose a company or organization you would like to work for upon graduation and check ads.

In response to the job ad you've found, draft a resume and job letter (otherwise known as an application and cover letter). It should be specific both to the job and to the company (meaning you will need to research the company to write an effective letter).

Choose either a skills (also known as functional) or chronological resume format, whichever is most relevant to your qualifications or potential job. You may not create a scannable resume for this assignment. The resume for this assignment should be visually appealing in terms of layout and well-written in terms of content and grammar.

See the reading in the text and the lecture notes for information about writing job letters. Use the block format and choose a standard font face and size.

Please double check the final version of both the resume and cover letter to ensure that it is free from grammar errors and typos. On a resume, one error is too many.

Remember that these documents need to be tutored by the Academic Center.

Evaluation Criteria

When grading your resume and cover letter, I will be looking at how well you have responded to the job ad. Specifically I will look at audience analysis, organization and development, format and design, length and tone, and grammar and mechanics.
