Lean On Me

View the movie Lean On Me (1989).

Question #1

In an overall sense, what do you make of Principal Joe Clark’s unorthodox leadership methods?  Are they perhaps more justified because of the extraordinary conditions he faces at the school, and the tight timeline he is working under?

Question #2

Compare and contrast the leadership approach Clark uses in the first assembly where he removed the incorrigible students, with the second assembly where he is attempting to motivate the students to excel in the upcoming state testing.  What was he attempting to accomplish in the first assembly, versus what he was trying to achieve in the second assembly?

Reflect on the major confrontations Clark has first with the music teacher, and then with the Vice-Principal.  Can the harshness of his style be justified, even under the extreme conditions?  If you were in his position, would you have handled those encounters as he did or differently?
