LAW 4001: INTERNATIONAL TRADE LAW
INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT- FALL 2014
Instructions:
Ø Answer any one of the questions listed below. Each question is worth 25 marks.
Ø Answers must be presented in typewritten format, in point size 12 font and with 1.5 spacing.
Ø Answers must not be less than 1250 words and should not exceed 2500 words (exclusive of footnotes and bibliography).
Ø The assignment is due in class on Monday November 3, 2014. If you are unable to make it to class on that day please ensure that another student hands it in for you. No assignments will be accepted by email or through the dropbox at H215.
Ø In addition to content, assignments will be graded on grammar, clarity, flow of ideas, proper paragraphing and sentence structure.
Ø All sources must be properly accredited.

Ø The assignment is a research assignment and there must be satisfactory evidence of research. Students are responsible for doing their individual research.
Question 1:
Using one or more appropriate case studies, critically examine the importance of a well-structured foreign investment regime and how governments can improve their investment policy framework to attract long-term private investment in support of economic growth.
Question 2:
Explain why corporate social responsibility is currently a trending issue in international trade law and discuss the extent to which (i) the OECD Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions, (ii) the United Nations Convention on Corruption and (c) the relevant Canadian legislation are appropriate legal instruments to address and promote the principles of good governance
Question 3:
Discuss the rationale for the WTO dispute settlement system, identify and evaluate the main features of this system and discuss some of challenges that developing countries face in this system. Make reference to the case brought by Antigua and Barbuda against the US with respect to online gambling in your answer.
Question 4:
Read the following Case Study and prepare a detailed analysis of the main discussion points:

Question 5:
Commencing with an examination of the Canada - Peru Agreement on Labour Cooperation, discuss the extent to which bilateral agreements can establish binding norms with respect to trade and labour.
