The Audit Team II
Carole, Rudy, Alicia, and Tyler are an auditing team that works fo
r state agency that regulates
banks. They go to banks to conduct audits to verify that the financial statements banks submit to
the state regulatory agency accurately reflect the financial condition of the bank. The purpose of
the audits is to, as the agen
cy head stated, “Keep the banks honest.” The ultimate goal is to
keep banks within the state from failing. The team has had four members for about eight
months but the department personnel budget actually provides for five members on the team.
Because of
a downturn in the economy the fifth position had gone unfilled as the state was
trying to control its budget deficit. When the economy began to
improve,
the department was
authorized to hire a fifth auditor.
The new auditor who joined the team was Don Voo
rhees. Voorhees
’
specialty was auditing the
information technology side of banking operations. Voorhees had just retired from the military
where he had spent most of his career as an internal auditor. When Voorhees joined the team,
the dynamics of the team
began to change almost immediately. Carole had been the informal
leader of the group for quite some time. Carole’s approach had been pretty much “hands
-
off”
and indirect. She mainly just set the structure for the team. That is, she made sure everyone
knew
where the next audit was, when hey would leave, when and where they would meet at
the site, and made sure everyone satisfactorily completed their part of the audit. Overall the
group was satisfied with Carole’s leadership and no one really complained ab
out it and if they
did have complaints about Carole’s leadership they kept them to themselves. But Don quickly
began to challenge Carole’s leadership. This was not an open struggle or conflict over power
and authority. It was rather that Don had a differen
t style than Carole, and Don wasn’t afraid to
speak his mind.
There were a couple of incidents that contrasted the styles of Carole and Don. The first incident
occurred when the audit team was sent an “emergency” audit to examine a bank which looked
like
it might fail because it made too many bad mortgage loans. Carole was notified about 3:00
in the afternoon that the team would leave the next morning at 7:00 and the state had chartered
a bus for them for the three hour drive to the audit site. Carole cal
led and notified everyone
about the departure time except Rudy who did not answer his office phone or his cell, so she left
voice messages on both phones. The next morning the team w

one later, but Don just let him have it right
then and there “in front of God and everyone” that it was rude to keep everyone waiting and that
he shou
ld check his voice mail. None of the other team members said anything, but privately
they enjoyed seeing Rudy get “reamed.” Carole didn’t say
a in
word Rudy’s defense and said
nothing more about the incident.
The next incident occurred at a meeting of th
e State Bank Regulatory Board. The team briefed
the Board on the status of the financially troubled bank they had audited. One member of the
board had an auditing background and began to challenge the team on an auditing practice.
The challenge was present
ed in a way that questioned the competence of the team. Carole
didn’t say anything, but Don spoke up and wasn’t afraid to challenge the Board member. A
“spirited” discussion occurred and Don seemed to get the best of the Board member.
After these two inc
idents the sentimetiment of the members, including Rudy, toward the team
leadership seemed to change. They seemed to favor Don’s leadership, and they began to
discuss among themselves the possibility of having Carole removed as
unofficial
team leader

and havin
g Don made the
official
team leader. There was a good deal of discussion among
Rudy, Alicia, and Tyler about what to do to have Carole removed as team leader. Tyler at first
defended Carole and asked what she had done that had been so incompetent or ineffe
ctive that
she should relinquish her leadership functions. He also pointed oout that she would still be a
member of the team and this might make for some bad working relationships on the team.
Neither Rudy nor Alicia addressed these concerns. Each had their
own motives fo
