Current Events Article Analysis

Prior to Session 2, collect an article that discusses an ethics issue facing business. The articles must not be more than 6 months old and must come from a respected, recognized news source (e.g., The New York Times, The Economist, Barron’s, Washington Post, Business Week, Fortune, etc.) If you are not sure about a source, please ask. Note that typing your subject into an online search engine (e.g., Yahoo, Google, etc.) is not researching; use the library databases such as Business Source Premier, Lexis-Nexis, ProQuest, and Regional Business News.

Each current events review should have three headings, "Summary" (summarize the news article), "Analysis" (analyze the article in relation to class readings and discussions), and "Response" (thoughtfully respond with your own opinion to the news summary and analysis).

Use the “Test Your Knowledge Form” in  Annual Editions: Business Ethics as an outline, along with information on writing article reviews is at: http://www.learn.maine.edu/ocls/criticalreview.php. Each article review should be 350-700 words, in APA format, and include citations and references as appropriate. Possible topics include, but are not limited to the following:

§  Current business scandals

§  Corporate codes of ethics

§  CEO compensation

§  Corporate ethics: e.g., insider trading, mergers, hostile takeovers, downsizing/layoffs

§  Privacy issues - Consumer privacy; Workplace surveillance issues (video, email, etc.)

§  Environmental abuses by corporations

§  Ethical dilemmas facing organizations, e.g., outsourcing, employment abuses (wages, working conditions, child labor, sweatshops), product dumping

§  Misleading, manipulative, deceptive advertising

§  Social responsibility

§  Employee loyalty

§  Whistle blowing

I've attached the deck that was discussed during class so that you can touch upon some of the topics discuss.

Let me know if you have any questions.
