Question 22.22. Define and then discuss the various aspects of the Special Drawing Right (SDR) of the IMF (Points : 3) The Special Drawing Right is defined as “an international reserve asset created by the IMF to supplement existing foreign exchange reserves”.
This international reserve serves as a “unit of account” for the International Monetary Funds as well as organizations – regional and international while also serving as a benchmark or a base to which some countries peg the exchange rates for their currencies.
The reserve has initially been established in terms of gold but is currently the “weighted value of currencies of the five major IMF members” having the highest exports of goods and services.
