Introduction to American Literature

Write a 1-2 page, double-spaced summary of the introduction you were assigned to read in the Norton Anthology of Literature, Volume C. Focus on how the editors define the importance of “realism” and “naturalism” in American Literature.  

Summaries are conventional essays, which you will write regularly in relation to written assignments and questions about your reading. They should be made up of an introduction, a body paragraph (or several, if necessary), and a conclusion. A good length to aim for is 1 1/2 to 2 double-spaced pages in 12 point font.

The following criteria will be used to evaluate written summaries of the various readings. Summaries will be evaluated holistically.

• Displays a clear and in-depth understanding of main points of the reading.
• Demonstrates professional language and writing style.
• Uses proper grammar and spelling.
