Option 1: What was the relationship between economic change (including urbanization and industrialization) and nationalism in Meiji Japan as depicted only in the novel Sanshiro? You must specifically use Marx and Engel’s Communist Manifesto or Rousseau’s Social Contract to develop your analysis.

Option 2: To what extent did people in Meiji Japan, as depicted only in Sanshiro, believe and embrace the European narrative of the Enlightenment? Be sure to consider any contradictory evidence to your argument. In your answer you must specifically also use at least one of Wollstonecraft’s Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Rousseau’s Social Contract, or Marx and Engel’s Communist Manifesto to illustrate how Europeans developed the narrative of Europe’s Enlightenment.
