What is an effective instructional strategy? An effective instructional strategy is a method a teacher would use in teaching students to help activate students’ curiosity about a class topic, to engage and motivate students to learn, to probe for critical thinking skills, and assess for understanding. Effective instructional strategies meet the needs of the students learning styles and developmental needs. Although students may have the same or similar learning disabilities, no two students will learn the same, due to the severity of their disability. Effective instructional strategies are a personalized approach to learning, opening multiple pathways and making it comfortable/more natural way for students to learn. “Effective instructional strategies are delivered by teachers who employ a wide repertoire of active learning strategies while devoting substantial instructional time to those specific strategies that involve students in skills practice” (Herbert & Lohrmann, 2011).

“Effective instructional design and delivery is important because task-specific strategies help students with LD to achieve success and become independent in their learning” (Hughes, 2011). The importance of considering the needs of students with disabilities when planning instruction is they require accommodations and modifications that will provide them an opportunity to receive an equal and equitable education. Students that do not have learning disabilities may or may not benefit from minor accommodations, but for student with learning disabilities it can make a huge difference in their learning. Accommodations like, pacing of instruction, flexible groupings, assistive technology and differentiation of instruction can mean the difference between academic failure or success. The purpose of effective instructional strategies is to focus on the students’ academic strengths and not dwell on their weaknesses.

Why is it so important to be able to use effective instructional strategies in your lessons?

Teachers should systematically adjust instruction based on assessment information to increase students’ level of learning. Teachers should plan lessons with a goal in mind; this aids the teacher in knowing what students will benefit from it. Another effective instructional strategy is self-monitoring. “Self-monitoring involves an individual systematically observing his/her own behavior and recording the occurrence (or lack thereof) of the behavior of interest” (Hager, K. D. (2012) p. 1). Additionally, self-monitoring students evaluate their degree of performance. Self-monitoring helps teachers to evaluate their teaching strategies to improve students’ learning performance.

Why is it critical that you consider the needs of students with disabilities when planning instruction?

Teachers must consider students with a disability individual need in order to provide accommodation and modification to satisfy their needs. During so enable teachers to differentiate the lessons and activities, use universal design and assistive technology to meet the student academic needs. Lessons should align with students with disabilities goals and objectives set in their IEP. This is critical for the students’ growth and learning progress. The important role of Special Education Teachers is to practice inclusion which depicts no two learners are alike; therefore, inclusive schools put emphasis on creating opportunities for students to learn through differentiation (Inclusive Schools Network, 2015). This criterion justifies that these teachers are able to provide supports and accommodations for students with disabilities to ensure their educational success and to help prepare them for future decision-making later in life.
