Study the printout of Act IV, Scene ii. Pay attention to how Dogberry uses language.  You can also study Dogberry's speech with Leonato in Act III, scene 5. Find 5-6 examples of Dogberry using words in the wrong way. Obviously Dogberry is a funny character but Shakespeare is also making some important points about how language and the "truth" are connected.

Consider also Dogberry's determination that someone write down that he "is an ass."  How might that be connected with the end of the play, in the scene that determines Beatrice and Benedick are in love?  What might Shakespeare be saying about spoken language? written language?

Once you have considered these scenes, write a one-page paper (single-spaced) in which you discuss the connection between what people SAY (their words) and what is TRUE. Print your paper and bring it to class.
