Pick ONE of the options below and write an essay.

1. The late mythologist Joseph Campbell says of monsters:

“You could be a local god, but for the people whom that local god conquered, you could be the enemy.” Whether you call someone a hero or a monster is all relative to where the focus of your consciousness may be. Discuss this cultural perspective as it relates to one specific monster (Hitler, Godzilla, Frankenstein, for example) in a specific time/place/culture or few of the "monsters" we have examined in the semester and how they solidify the cultural beliefs and values from which they were born.

2. Write an essay that defends a thesis about

--how two of the monsters discussed in class help to “map” and illustrate a specific aspect of American culture. What sort of statement does each monster make, and how does considering the monsters together provide a more complete picture of that aspect of American culture? Refer to at least one of the essays or book excerpts assigned as you defend your thesis with analysis, details, and quotes.

Notes:

--Remember to cite appropriately in your essay as well as have a Works Cited page with everything borrowed.

--the essay should be approx... 4-6 pages (not including the Works Cited page). The minimum is 4 full pages.

--include a writer’s memo with your process in writing the essay, the strengths and weaknesses of the finished final draft, and a predicted grade

--utilize “Monster Culture” and/or “The Uncanny” in your analysis.
