" On Wednesday Alana Levine, ASU's recycling program manager, spoke to us about her Zero Waste policy at ASU. Her job here at ASU is probably under appreciated because many people do not know the time and effort it takes to make a clean and waste free campus. I was one of those people, I had no idea the big picture of recycling was such a complex process. Alana explained that to divert or reduce 90% of campus solid waste we must take part in; recycling, composting, repurposing, and aversion efforts like avoiding waste. I thought simply dropping my empty water bottle into the recycling bin was enough, but there is so much more to it. 10,000 tons of solid waste per year is produced between 4 campuses at ASU, a lot has to be done in order to keep that amount of MSW under control. I liked the fact that Alana related this issue to us, and how we can help. She also pointed out that people like her, who are in charge of managing this, understand that it is hard to make some of these things a habit. Alana pointed out that sustainability is different for everyone, meaning everyone is used to different ways/types of recycling, and each person was taught how to take care of waste in a somewhat different way. Overall, we must close that 'economic loop' she was talking about, we need to keep up with the different ways to manage waste in order to be successful. She said long term goal, have two bins; 1 for compost (like food) and the other for recyclables. An easy-to-use-system is the key to creating a waste free space, and I have no doubt I will try to reduce, reuse, and recycle more now! She was enthusiastic about what she does, she shared a lot of crazy, but realistic pictures with us, and simply allowed us as students to see the big picture behind what goes on with recycling here at ASU."
