A hospital records the number of floral deliveries its patients receive each day. For a two week period (14 days), the records show:

 Day 1       25

 Day 2      37

 Day 3      36

 Day 4       34

 Day 5      38

 Day 6      31

 Day 7      36

 Day 8      29

 Day 9      25

 Day 10    38

 Day 11     35

 Day 12     36

 Day 13     27

 Day 14     33

(a) Use exponential smoothing with a smoothing constant of .35 to forecast the number of deliveries. Be sure to provide a forecast for day fifteen, the point of the whole exercise. (b) Perform the MSE calculation for this forecast

In order to forecast the attendance at an annual tennis tournament, a model has been developed which uses attendance from the previous year and the amount spent for advertising this year. From the years shown in the table, forecast the attendance for years 2-5 and calculate the forecast error using the following multiple regression model:

Attendance = 6000 + .3($) + .2 (Attlag)

Note: ‘Attlag’ means last-year’s actual attendance. So in forecasting the second year’s attendance, we’d use the first year’s actual attendance value, and so forth.

The following table shows the annual maintenance costs for several cars, as well as their age.

(a)  Develop a regression model that relates maintenance costs (dependent variable) as a function of age (independent variable). What are the regression-equation parameters?

(b)  Predict the annual cost of maintaining an eight-year-old car.
