When applying for jobs, a professional cover letter is the first opportunity you have to create a strong impression with an employer. This task will allow you to write a strong cover letter for 1 of the organizations that you researched during Phase 2.

To write a professional cover letter, it is important to understand the skills that are necessary for the position that you are pursuing. Be sure to complete the following:

  1. Search the Internet to select a position offered at one of the organizations that you researched for Phase 2 Individual Project.
  2. Identify and create a list of the required skills for the position.
  3. Copy, paste, and then save the job description for the position you selected so you can refer to it when you are writing your cover letter.
  4. Follow the instructions below to develop a cover letter tailored to the job description and your field of interest and your field of interest.

Cover Letter Instructions

  1. Utilize the Cover Letter Template linked below as a guide to developing your personal cover letter.
  2. Save the Cover Letter utilizing the following format: "LastNameFirstInitial_UNIV201_Cover_Letter." (For Example: PrickettD_UNIV201_Cover_Letter

Create Your Cover Letter

  1. Click on the Cover Letter Template Linked Here.
  2. Personalize and edit the cover letter to include your skills, qualifications, experience, and education. Tailor your cover letter to one of the organizations and job descriptions identified in Phase
  3. To tailor or letter, read the job description thoroughly and include items in your cover letter that are compatible with the job description.
  4. Once you have completed your draft, read through the cover letter line-by-line, and make edits where appropriate. Keep in mind that any typos, spelling, or grammatical errors within your cover letter could potentially lead to your application being rejected by prospective employers, so edit this letter with great care to ensure you are submitting an error-free, polished document.

Save Your Cover Letter

  1. Once you are finished editing your letter, save the Cover Letter to your home computer utilizing the following format: “LastNameFirstInitial UNIV201 Cover Letter.” (For example: PrickettD_UNIV201_Cover_Letter)
  2. Then, upload the Word document to the Discussion Board so it can be critiqued by your fellow classmates and your instructor.

Use the first paragraph to get the employer’s attention, reflect your current status, and state your formal desire to apply for a position.  Example:

I learned through (website or person’s name) that (name of organization) is in need of a qualified and skilled (name of position), and I believe my skill set would closely match this type of position.

 

The second paragraph should highlight specific qualifications you have that should appeal to the employer, taking into context the job description. Adapt this section to the listed needs of the job posting and specifically mention your past, most relevant accomplishments. You may also outline educational experience. A “highlights” bullet section attracts the eye of the employer to your specific abilities. Use industry-specific key words and bold font to emphasize points. Example: 

I can contribute (list key qualifications) to a (list the department/team) and am confident that my experience in (explain field category) will contribute to the success of the (name the department). As you will see in my attached resume, I graduated with a (degree here) and look forward to using my experience and education to contribute (specific need, consider job posting). Further, as an experienced (past or current job field), I (summarize your main impact on your prior or current job).  My accomplishments to reflect this include:

 

§List 2-4 specific pieces of evidence that provide concrete proof of your ability

§These should not be pasted word-for-word from your resume

§Employee retention rate increase of 14% in 3 years

§Workplace compensation payouts decreased by 7% over 2 years

OR, if you don’t have relevant experience as of yet, use this format:

As a student of (field), I have developed the following key skills that should prove to benefit your organization:

 

·   Create bullets here outlining 1-2 specific examples from your background

·   Again, do not paste word-for-word from resume

Use the last “paragraph” or few lines to thank the potential employer for his/her time and consideration. Also reflect a desire to hear from them in a professional way. Do not repeat facts from above here, but show a sincere desire to meet them and demonstrate your will to serve as part of the team. Example: Thank you for your time and kind consideration. I believe I can serve as a prime asset to (company name’s) mission toward (list specific field language, such as “accurate and effective customer service”) and look forward to speaking with you to explore how I might be able to add value to your company. Please do not hesitate to contact me.
