Support your comments with two references and respond to at least two of your classmates.

1.     Racial Identity Models 
Read pages 70-86, where the texts describes the various racial identity models and discuss your own identity and what influences impacted how you see yourself in relation to these models and your stage of personal cultural development.  What biases and prejudices do you have yet to address or confront in order to elevate your level of professional practice and multicultural competency?  Write your response in 250-
300 words, supporting your comments with two references and respond to at least two of your classmates.  

2.     Family & Culture  
Log into 
My Helping Lab and read the cases under the Culturally Competent Practice section of the Case Archives and select one to discuss with regards to issues specific to the identified culture.  Refer to readings on pages 115 – 124 to analyze and determine the most culturally competent manner in which to manage the case as a human service professional.  Think of what “family” means to you and how it might be different from the clients identified in your case study.  Discuss these topics in 250-300 words as well as any issues that might enhance or impede your effectiveness related to similarities and/or differences.  Support your comments with two references and respond to at least two of your classmates.

Read The Story of Timothy on page 91 in your text.  Use it to help you begin thinking about writing your own story of uniqueness in a diverse world. 

In this 3-4 page assignment you will discuss the unique and diverse aspects of yourself as they relate to:

  • Gender, age, religion, race, ethnicity, ability, class, and sexual orientation (GARREACS). 
  • Explain “who you are” and what your experiences have been as they relate to the concept of diversity. 
  • Include any aspects reviewed in the first two weeks’ readings (Ch. 1,2,3,4, 6) that are relevant to YOU. 
  • Assess your development in relation to the identity theories discussed in the readings.  Which model applies the most to you
  • Consider briefly any historical, social/family, financial/economic, cultural, or political considerations that have specifically impacted you or your family in your development and in your ability to meet your own needs.
  • Summarize the impact of any programs or laws that help or hinder your ability to have the life you would like to have.
  • Explain how any of the diverse aspects of “who you are” have either been helpful or hindered your ability to obtain health or human services.
  • Illustrate your points with any personal examples that are relevant.
    Summarize with a focus on where you see the need to gain understanding and insight for future work with
    diverse others.

1.     Gender and Sexual Orientation 
Consider a time when you, someone you know, or someone with whom you have worked has felt discriminated against as a result of gender bias or sexual orientation.  Were there other diverse issues present, such as religion or racial background that made the situation even more difficult, due to family traditions and culture or other related concerns?  Describe a scenario, using appropriate citations, that demonstrates how a culturally sensitive human service worker would manage such a situation towards achieving a positive outcome in 250-300 words.  Remember that discrimination and prejudice can have many looks and perspectives not just the obvious or publicized.  Support your comments with two references and respond to at least two of your classmates. 

2.     Ability, Attractiveness, & Aging  
Discuss these issues in 250 – 300
words after watching the media segment on The Midriff and reading the article about Melanie Benn, considering the following questions:  How does the focus on beauty and youth affect us as we age or if we are disabled?  How does it affect our ability to work with someone who does not share our perspective or condition relative to these terms?  Support your comments with two references and respond to at least two of your classmates.

Watch the video, 
East vs. West-The Myths that Mystify by Devdutt Pattanaik.  Define and discuss the terms “religion” and “spirituality,” reflecting on the video and readings.  Consider the following statements from your text (Schmidt, 2006, p. 147) and summarize what they mean to you: 

Jonathan Swift: “We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.” 
Ralph Waldo Emerson:  “Great men are they who see that spiritual is stronger than any material force, that thoughts rule.”  
                 
Evaluate the difficulties that may surface as a result of having a different belief system than your clients and share your reflections on this topic in 250-300 words.  Support your comments with two references and respond to at least two of your classmates. 

2.     Social Class  
Watch the video, 
Escaping Poverty, by Jacqueline Novogratz.  Define the term, “classism,” and discuss it in relation to socioeconomic status (SES) as it pertains to the relative ranking by financial wealth within society.  Discuss how social class impacts our ability to relate to those who are higher or lower than us in our roles as human service workers, in the delivery of human services.  Support your comments with two references and respond to at least two of your classmates.

1.     Cultural Competence 
After reading the chapter and the section on cultural competencies (p. 209 – 214), select one of the videos to discuss in relation to the cultural competencies and describe how you would proceed to treat the cases identified in a culturally effective manner, in 250-300 words. Support your comments with two references and respond to at least two of your classmates. 

2.     Ethical and Legal Considerations  
Log into 
My Helping Lab and read the two case studies identified (Case 1 and Case 4).  Select one of the cases and in 250-300 words, discuss the ethical issues involved and how you or a culturally ethical and sensitive counselor would manage the situations described.  Support your comments with two references and respond to at least two of your classmates.

For your final paper, you will select one aspect of cultural diversity that you would like to study in depth. For example, consider the following:

You will prepare a research paper in which you will discuss the following:

1.     Research and examine the pertinent historical, political, social, economic and cultural factors.

2.     Consider and summarize any relevant developmental theory models.

3.     Identify the relevant laws or programs that have either helped or restricted access to care and support.

4.     Distinguish and analyze the common issues related to life challenges and this aspect of diversity.

5.     Evaluate how this, in combination with two other aspects of diversity, can lead to increased needs or issues.  For example, if someone is female, African American, and lesbian, will there be additional challenges?  Select any combination of 3 aspects of diversity to discuss.

6.     Identify and describe at least two resources currently available in your area for someone needing special services. 

7.     Discuss any relevant personal experiences or new insights you have had related to this aspect of diversity.

8.     Explain how your personal characteristics will either complement or conflict with this diversity issue.  Consider your own biases and prejudices or those of your family of origin.

9.     Discuss relevant concerns, cautions or insights necessary for you to be a culturally competent human service professional.

10.   Activity:  For fun, discuss how the mnemonic GARREACS will help you remember this list of possible areas of diversity that you could encounter in human service work.  If you would like, create a new mnemonic that makes more sense to you and include it in your discussion!
