1.  Confucianists and Daoists are often characterized as holding positions that are nearly diametrically opposed.  What are the best arguments that one can come up with in support of the idea that they may share more values and ideas and goals than is commonly supposed?

2.  Would a Shintoist have more in common with a Confucianist or a Daoist?  In your answer, you should consider not only ideas and values, but also practices and rituals.  You will need to read the textbook chapter carefully to make a determination about how to answer this question.

3.  “The increasing variety among Mahayana Buddhist sects in China and Japan suggest that it is more proper to speak of Buddhisms rather than Buddhism.”  Do you agree with this statement?  If so, why?  If not, why not?  A more convincing answer will tend to think about detailed evidence both for and against the statement rather than settling for a simple, superficial answer.  [NOTE:  the online lecture from 10.14.16 has a great deal of information on Buddhist sects in Japan.]

4.  On page 210 in your textbook, the author describes “The Problem for Humans” in Shinto.  Read over this short paragraph carefully.  Which other religious view—Hinduism, Theravedan Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, Daoism or Confucianism—seems to think of the problem for humans in the most similar way to Shinto?  Which other religious view seems most different from Shinto on the problem for humans?
