b. Annotated Bibliography Guidelines
An annotated bibliography is a list of sources on a particular topic. Each source is MLA formatted and includes an annotation. This annotation should briefly summarize the source as well as describe how it might fit into your research project (For more on annotated bibliographies, please see The Little Seagull Handbook, page 66, or visit www.owl.english.purdue.edu). The purpose: Compiling and writing an annotated bibliography prepares you for your research project by centralizing your sources and research. Gathering and evaluating sources is a necessary part of surveying the academic discourse related to your area of study. And becoming familiar with the academic discourse surrounding your area of study is how you will discover the way in which your ideas fit in with the scholarly conversation. The annotated bibliography will lay the foundation for your literature

review.

Annotated bibliography must be MLA formatted and include a brief introductory statement of scope. Annotations must be concise and include a brief summary of the source (i.e., the gist and pertinent context) as well as describe how the source might fit into your overall research. Do not quote from what you are summarizing; rather, your annotations must be paraphrased. Your annotated bibliography must contain a minimum of 10 sources, with at least 8 of those sources being from academic journals.
