Prepare: Read a few of the biographies of famous journalists available on NYU’s list of 100 Outstanding Journalists in the United States in the Last 100 Years. Pay attention to the kinds of details included in the biographies and note the kinds of details that are missing.

Reflect: Select the moment of your life that convinced you to pursue this career path. Think about all of the different ways in which that moment affects you. Think also about how your interest in journalism began and what it means to you now.

Write Icon

Write: Write a 200- to 250-word blog post why you chose to pursue a career in journalism. Writing in third person, construct your post around the points that you think are the most important. In your first sentence, let the reader know immediately what you are writing about, and try to use an active, descriptive verb. Here’s an example:

Reading the sports section of the New York Times always lifts the spirits of Julie Jones.

From the first sentence, there should be no doubt about the subject of this post. In your post, you must include at least one credible source of information that is related to at least one of the questions to support your ideas. Include a byline at the beginning of your blog post. At the end of your blog, include a full reference for all sources cited in the body of your blog. All citations and references must adhere to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. View the Formatting Stories and Blogs for assistance with formatting your blog.

Check it! Your blog must be submitted through Grammarly and Turnitin prior to submission.
