This study sheet will help you to write a rough draft of the writing assignment that you will revise later on. Answer the following questions as you work through your study to build a strong and successful essay.

Your Assignment

Write an argument about which of two artists Dante would have chosen to illustrate the Inferno. You'll choose two images from each artist as well as selections from the text as evidence to support your argument. Once you've written your argument, you'll present it to the class using digital media.

If you come across a word you don't know, write it in a blank space below. Try to figure out what the word means by looking at its context. Then use your dictionary or the Internet to look up the correct definition for the word.

Write a short answer to each question.

1. Write your claim or thesis statement in the space below.

2. Write your introduction paragraph.

3. Write three topic sentences, one for each body paragraph in your essay.

4. Write your first body paragraph, in which you demonstrate the author's intent.

5. Write your second body paragraph, in which you explain why the artist you've chosen is the one the author would have chosen to illustrate the story.

6. Write your third body paragraph, in which you give evidence that your chosen artist is a better fit for the author's purpose than the other artist.
