In this activity, you will explore the differences between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10. You will also have a complete understanding of the purpose and timeline for the transition.

Requirements:

1. Go to the government website of the Centers for Disease Control at www.cdc.gov and conduct a search for ICD-10-CM.

Also, read the ICD-10 Fact Sheet released by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Note. ICD-10 was implemented in 1994 by World Health Organization (WHO) member states. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is responsible for developing ICD-10-CM, a modification that is being implemented in the United States.

1. Review the information found on the website and handout regarding ICD-10-CM.

1. Prepare a 1-2 page summary of information about ICD-10-CM covering ALL of the following:
1. Purpose of ICD-10-CM.
2. Compare and contrast ICD-9 and ICD-10 - be specific about ways that they are different.
3. Implementation plans for ICD-10-CM - when will we start using it?
4. How do you think this will improve coding and reimbursement in the United States?

Your paper should:
