Hate crimes are still very prevalent in the United States. When talking about hate crimes in today's age it does not have to be about race like it was in the past, a couple of examples but not limited to can be about religion or a person's sexuality,  which has became a very popular topic in today's world. The most recent hate crimes I would probably say is those against a person's sexuality. There have been a ton of accusations and negative connotations against individuals that are gay. One reason is because it goes against some individual's belief system. When reporters tell the story of some type of dispute between two parties the viewers have to remember that there are two sides to every story and the reporter could have a biased opinion and sway towards one side of the story and can makes it sound like the other side is more at fault. In other words a person has to keep an open mind about the information that is given and to use the best judgement as possible and how accurate it may be. In other words not everything I have heard is accurate and I have had to do a little more research on some news clips to find out the real truth behind the reasoning as to why some people had did what they said or had done.

Discussion !
Collapse

Throughout my career within this Criminal Justice program I have discussed the issue of hate crimes over several classes. Hate crimes are issues that occur on a daily basis around the United States of America. Hate crimes are actions that are aimed at negatively impacting an individual based on race, gender, sex, religion, age, etc. and is carried out by a person or group of people with prejudice towards their victims. Hate crimes occur around the world but also specifically within our nation on a daily basis. One hate crime that I can recall occurring is the man who attacked a Jewish synagogue with the intentions of killing individuals of the Jewish race. This to me is the epitome of the words hate crime. This offender had a previous bias towards individuals of the Jewish faith. Where his bias and prejudice originated could be traced to a number of incidents in his life or his upbringing as a child. The offenders hate and bias towards Jews turned into a crime when he wanted to use violence to kill a certain group of people. I feel as though this is an accurate representation of what may be deemed as a hate crime.
In another instance one example that often comes to mind when discussing hate crimes, was the violence perpetrated against African Americans at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan. Throughout the 20th century African Americans had acts of violences perpetrated against them because of the color of their skin. The Ku Klux Klan is often synonymous with the concept of hate crimes and might be the first things many people think of when discussing the topic. This would also be an accurate depiction of hate crimes that many students learn throughout American history. Overall one must not look far to find an example of hate crimes occurring not only around the world but in our own societies.
