Which character resonates with you most in The Great Gatsby and why?  This might not necessarily be a character you like or one who is like you, but it might be a character you can relate to in some way.  Perhaps you learn something from the negative example.  Perhaps you admire something about the character.

1. Jay Gatsby has a dream he works hard to attain—and the dream dies.  What do you do when your dream dies, or is “deferred” as Langston Hughes describes in his poem below, “Dream Deferred.”  How do you think you would handle a potentially devastating, life-changing disappointment?

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up 
like a raisin in the sun? 
Or fester like a sore-- 
And then run? 
Does it stink like rotten meat? 
Or crust and sugar over-- 
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags 
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?
