Alain Locke locked used the term "the New Negro" to describe African-Americans in the years after the First World War. He called for assertiveness and self-acceptance, racial pride and artistic expressions. For this response, first describe what you think Locke means when he uses the term "the New Negro," and then, using either McKay's poem or Toomer's short story, explore whether or not they are fulfilling Locke's call to action.
