Goals of annual report

What are some of the obvious goals of an annual report? What other functions can an annual report fulfill? What components or information in an annual report would give you confidence in investing in that company? In buying products from that company? What is the relationship between annual reports and PR? Is this important when looking to buy products or invest in organizations? Why or why not?
