You will do research in order to explain the issue and gather evidence to support your position on it.
Your paper should fully explain the chosen issue, using sources from each side of the debate. You should construct a strong thesis that states your own position on the issue. Present reasons supported by evidence that back up your position. You may propose certain actions or solutions. Make sure you know who your audience is. I am part of your audience, and I will want to see that you understand your chosen issue. In addition, decide if you are writing for an agreeing audience, neutral or wavering audience, or disagreeing audience.
Reminders and Other Detailed Requirements:
Create strong topic sentences and transitions.
Structure your paragraphs according to your reasons/points, not by source.
Integrate quotations and various types of evidence well.
You must acknowledge/refute an opposing view (counterargument).
Use in-text (parenthetical) citation to cite your evidence.
This is NOT a personal essay. Use “I” sparingly if at all.
Length: 5 pages minimum not including Works Cited/Annotated Bibliography, which should be stapled at the end of your final essay.
Required sources:
1 or more essays from our book if you are using their ideas at all
1 - 2 reference sources—hard copy or electronic
1-2 book sources from the library—hard copy or e-book
2 – 3 electronic sources found from searching the library databases
These can be journal articles, essays, newspaper reports, case studies, etc.
Other sources as needed
6 sources minimum! Also, you must cite most of these sources in your essay. BEWARE of reading or citing unreliable sources such as Wikipedia. You should search via the library for most, if not all, of your sources.
