Gender roles in adds

1.      For this assignment, you will analyze 5 TV advertisements. Your analysis should focus on describing the gendered nature of the ads, making sure to include your observations about whether or not they adhere to commonly held stereotypes.

Please include a brief explanation of the advertisement, including what took place and what product it was for.

1 is DUE: At the beginning of class on Sunday, 7.14.13.  Assignments should be typed and turned in as a hard copy.  Each ad or commercial can be analyzed in its own section; you do not need to make this assignment one coherent essay.  Analysis should be roughly two-three paragraphs per ad or commercial.  Please keep in mind that content matters more than length

2.      For this assignment, you will analyze a fairy tale for its gender messages.  What to do:

Choose ONE fairy tale (Disney movie are a good source of ideas.  Here is a website that summarizes quite a few stories as well: http://www.surlalunafairytales.com/

Analyze THREE characters from the story.  You should focus on how they are portrayed (young, old, attractive, unattractive, nice, sly, etc.) as well as the role that each character plays in the story (hero, heroine, villian, etc.).  Finally, assess the overall story for its messages about gender and the extent to which it reinforces or challenges gender stereotypes.

All responses must be typed and handed in as a hard copy in class on Sunday, 7.21.13.  Responses should be roughly 2-3 pages typed, using double-spacing and normal font size and margins.

3.      chose with at least 6 songs that are somehow related

to the topic of gender. An accompanying typed explanation, including the song title and artist,

explaining specifically how the song lyrics relate to course material. This is due 7.23.13.
