Gay Marriage
The title of Schulman's selection, “Gay Marriage—and Marriage,” gives one immediate insight into his position, that gay marriage and marriage are two separate entities. Should marriage be considered a union of two people or strictly the union of a man and a woman? At the heart of this issue lies the question of whether or not gays are fundamentally different from straights, not in a physical sense but in their capacity to function as a couple in a committed relationship. Can the marriage line be drawn there? Should individuals be permitted to design their own familial relationships or is should it be defined by a government?
