Forum #1[1]:

Improving access to skilled attendance childbirth remains a major public-health challenge in Africa (1, 2). A set of factors has been identified as barriers to health care access: sociocultural factors, perceived benefits and needs, physical and financial accessibility (3, 4). Financial limitations were noticed as an important barrier to access to maternal health care (3). In the context of achieving the Millennium Development Goals, African countries have engaged in political actions to minimize this factor by eliminating user fees.

It is important to critically analyze sources to ensure that the article or body of work was not plagiarized either in part or as a whole and that the sources used are properly credited. Case in point, we all can recall the resent controversy over the speech given by the spouse of the RNC presidential nominee. Equally as important is to ensure that the article being reviewed meets its stated objectives and whether any new insights/knowledge or questions were raised or answered. Also a critical analysis is important to establish if the body of work is primary or secondary source in nature. For example, when the president writes a book about his/her presidency after leaving office; it would be considered a primary source but articles written about him in the news print or another individual would be secondary source. In the same way, if a scientist conducts an experiment/research and reports on the result, it would be a primary source but someone else writing about the experiment conducted and its result would be secondary source. Furthermore, does the writer show that he/she has good knowledge of the research topic by presenting relevant and current research as evidence?

Scholarly sources are more appropriate for academic research because they contribute to the quality of the research paper. The authority and credibility of the sources has been verified, and the research topic peer reviewed prior to publication. Finally, one can be assured that the topic has been properly and thoroughly covered in the experiment/research.

Forum #3[3]:

Academic dishonesty undermines graduate studies by “discrediting you and the university community as a whole” (GCU, n.d.). Integrity is at the foundation of a person or community’s reputation. Reputation is how others view you and your work, so maintaining integrity in your studies will help establish the credibility of your work and uphold the university’s academic policy. GCU’s policies are “shaped by their fundamental values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility” (GCU, n.d.). If policies are not upheld and students are not expected to maintain academic honesty, then the whole purpose of graduate school is defeated. With that in mind, it's important to know your sources, cite your sources, only turn in your original work, and ask for help when you need assistance with completing an assignment with integrity.

Post the excerpt as your initial Discussion Forum post with your paraphrase of this excerpt directly underneath using appropriate APA paraphrased citations. Use the link below to assist you. Review your peers' paraphrasing and comment on at least two posts regarding what they did well, and what they could work on for a better paraphrase.

[2] Main Forum #2 was: Why is it important to critically analyze sources? Why are scholarly sources more appropriate for academic research?

[3] Main Forum #3 was: Read the policy violation examples at

As you read through the material, think about how these types of situations might arise in your academic career. How does academic dishonesty undermine the purpose of graduate school?
