In this assignment you will analyze 3 newspaper articles on the same political topic regarding the federal government on the same day.
Find a political topic related to the federal government in 3 newspapers. Read the articles carefully. In 1-2 double-spaced pages, provide an analysis of potential bias by focusing on the following:
- Describe briefly the topic you are researching and any controversy about it
- Does one article or another use particularly negative or positive adjectives to describe the person or policy that is being reported? (for your own use, keep a list of adjectives and do a count for each article)
- Do the articles provide roughly balanced perspectives on the person or policy being reported?
- Do the articles seem to favor one party or one ideology?
- Conclude your analysis by reporting whether you feel you have uncovered any bias, and if so, what the implications are. If you do not uncover much or any bias, what does this indicate about the state of American print journalism?

Your essay must indicate which newspapers you analyze. Your essay must include a thesis statement around which your analysis is organized. Here is an example:
“In this essay I analyzed (policy x) using the Washington Post, Washington Times, and New York Times. My analysis uncovered a generally objective coverage of (policy x). However, two of the papers stood out in terms of bias. The Washington Times article was particularly negative in its coverage of the president’s actions on (policy x), using the conclusion of the article to raise serious questions. On the other hand, the New York Times provided a more positive conclusion about the potential effects of (policy x). No immediate bias was apparent in the Washington Post coverage of (policy x). In the following analysis I provide greater depth to my comparative analysis.”
